Tatla Lake & Area Vision and Strategic Plan

Objectives, Strategies & Choices Tool
Tatla Lake & Area Community Vision and Strategic Plan — Phase 3 starts now!

Welcome to the Tatla Lake & Area Strategic Planning Exercise!

Over the past few months, many citizens in Tatla Lake & Area shared what's important to them about their community, and their ideas about the future. We took all those thoughts and created a vision, 8 objectives (telling us the "Why") and a list of over 70 Actions (telling us the "How"). That's a lot!

Now, we need your help to figure out which actions will get us to your vision.

📱 If you're doing this on your phone, turning it sideways (landscape) can make the sliders and tables easier to read.

This tool asks for your real attention and thought, and will take some time to go through properly. If you only have 5 minutes, or this feels like more than you can take on right now, that's okay — click here for our simple survey instead.
"Tatla Lake & Area is a welcoming, self-sufficient and resilient community, surrounded by wilderness."

That's where this exercise comes in. Think of this as a roadmap. This exercise supports clear thinking and better community discussions by breaking down each step. We don't all agree on everything all the time, so we need to understand what's important to each of us — and our preferences.

Here's how it works:

•

Weighing What Matters (what your heart is telling you is important)

First, you'll use sliders to show where you think this plan can make the most important changes for you. For example, should the community spend more time and energy on "helping people earn a living" or on "basic infrastructure and services"?

•

Thinking It Through (what your head needs to know)

We took all the ideas put forward by the community, plus some that have worked in other similar places, and described the timing, scale, initial cost, current status, and other aspects. This is available to support your thinking.

•

Testing Real Choices (what your gut is telling you)

Next, you'll see a few different strategies built from the 70+ action ideas we heard from citizens, and we'll ask you to pick the one you think will best help achieve Tatla Lake & Area's vision. And you'll get a chance to build a strategy you think might be even better.

•

The Scorecard (The Math Behind the Scenes)

Finally, we calculate your personal priorities by multiplying how well an action has a positive impact by how much you weighted your objectives. This information is provided back to you.

•

See the Results (The Grand Finale)

At the very end, you'll instantly see your personalized results, as well as the strategies that other participants have built. Yours will be shared too, so others can see what you chose.

What's next? By looking at everyone's results, our community can see which projects have the biggest support, helping us build a future that reflects what the Tatla Lake & Area actually cares about!

Before you start

Tell us how you'd like to be identified, and your age group.

We suggest using your real name, so neighbours know it's really you. The first time you use a name, we'll give you a private 4-digit PIN — save it! You'll need it to come back and change your answers later, so that only you can edit them. Your name (not your PIN) is what other participants can see next to your responses.

If this is your first time using this tool, leave this PIN entry blank and a unique PIN will be given to you.

Every voice helps shape the Tatla Lake and Area's future. We hope to hear from you!
Where does change matter most to you?
Move the sliders to show where you'd want improvements first. Leaving them all equal says they all matter about the same to you.

Rank the five strategies

What is your gut telling you?

💬 Got thoughts on these strategies or on this exercise? There's a space for comments at the bottom.

Using community input and research based on what works in BC, we developed 5 initial strategies by combining a set of actions based on a specific reasoning for you to think about. Consider these as starter strategies. Please review them and then put them in your order of preference by dragging them up/down with the cluster of 6 dots, or use the arrows — 1st is your top pick.

💡 For more information on these strategies, scroll to the end of the strategies to see how well they meet the objectives — this is called a "Performance Table."

Strategy Performance Table

For reference: how well each strategy meets all 8 objectives — the same data behind the Technical ranking on the Results page. Green means a strong positive impact, red means a trade-off (it makes that objective worse, not just less good). Total adds up all 8 objective scores into one overall number — useful for a quick comparison, but worth reading alongside the individual objectives, since a good total can still hide a real trade-off in one area.

Fixed order, not sorted. Hover or tap a bar for exact numbers. Use the dropdown in the upper right to pick a different participant and see their weights highlighted against everyone else's.
What am I looking at? Each bar shows the highest and lowest weight anyone gave that objective, with a diamond marking the middle (median) value. Switch to the pie chart to see one person's full breakdown.
How does this help? Short bars mean people mostly agree. Long bars mean they don't — and you can see where you personally land compared to everyone else.
Solid dash — the selected participant's weight
Vertical line — range across all participants
Diamond — median for all participants

Three ways of ranking the same five strategies

What am I looking at? A heat map: darker green means a higher rank, lighter blue means a lower one. Technical treats every objective equally. Weighted uses real objective weights — Group (the room's median) and You from Step 1 side by side. Direct is the gut-feel pick from Step 2 — same Group/You split.
How does this help? Where the colours line up across a row, that's agreement. Where they don't — especially between Group and You — that's worth a second look or a conversation.

How Priorities Differ by Age

Median objective weights, grouped into three age bands. Only bands with at least one response show up.

Build your own strategy

What mix of actions would you build?

💬 Got thoughts on this page? There's a space for comments at the bottom.

Check the actions for your mix. Your strategy will help guide community discussions and inform the final strategy. Think of this as a 10-year plan. As a guide, a realistic total is about $3–5 million over 10 years (roughly $300K–$500K per year). This assumes the community trust's current budget is used to attract grants and partner funding. Larger totals, up to about $10 million, are possible but would depend on major outside funding or a board-approved draw on the trust's principal — a new health clinic is one example. Click "+" for details on each action:
  • Score = total across all 8 objectives — a high score means it does a lot to address multiple objectives.
  • Cost = estimated dollars. A few newer actions show TBD — they haven't been through full assessment yet. These are very early estimates and will go up or down based on final design. Don't get too hung up on these — they're meant as general guidance.
  • Enabling means this is a project that supports and is needed for other projects to move forward.

Keep an eye on the summary bar below as you check boxes: if your total goes above a reasonable cost range, the bar will turn yellow (or red if well over) — that's your cue to reduce the cost of your strategy.

Action Score Cost
Example (Flagship: Tourism/Outdoor Recreation) — Rationale: Lots of small grants ($10K–$50K) rarely change a community's future on their own. This strategy picks one big project instead — Martin Lake — and builds it in stages: check it's realistic, build up local skills and capacity, get the money, then run it. Prove it creates real jobs and income before starting the next big thing.

Performance Table — All Strategies

How every strategy — the 5 starters and everything the community has built — meets all 8 objectives. Green means a strong positive impact, red means a trade-off (it makes that objective worse, not just less good). Total adds up all 8 objective scores into one overall number — a useful quick comparison, but worth reading alongside the individual objectives, since a good total can still hide a real trade-off in one area.
